Where to park in Ohrid Old Town: a local guide

Parking in central Ohrid is manageable when you decide where the car will stay before you arrive. The difficult version is reaching the Old Bazaar in peak season, following a generic map pin and then searching for an available space with luggage in the car.
The short answer
If your accommodation includes a reserved parking space, use it. Ask the host for the garage entrance pin, the apartment entrance pin and walking directions between the two. They may be separate locations.
If parking is not included, use a clearly marked public or private car park outside the narrowest Old Town streets. Read the sign at the entrance for the current price, payment method, operating hours and overnight rules. These details can change, so a recent photo or an old travel post should not be treated as the final authority.
Why parking near Ohrid Old Town needs planning
Ohrid’s historic centre was made for walking, not modern traffic. Around the Old Bazaar, Old Chinar and the hillside Old Town you will encounter pedestrian areas, narrow lanes, one-way streets and access controls. A route that looks possible on a map may not be appropriate for a visitor’s car.
July and August are the busiest months. Weekend evenings, concerts and public events add extra demand. The most useful advantage is therefore not simply “parking nearby”; it is having a specific space and clear arrival instructions.
Your three practical options
1. Accommodation with reserved parking
This is the simplest option for an overnight stay. Confirm these details before travelling:
- Is the space reserved or subject to availability?
- Is it on the property, in a garage or off the premises?
- Is there a height, width or turning restriction?
- Can you enter and leave whenever you need?
- How far is the walk from the car to the accommodation?
“Free parking” can describe very different arrangements. A precise answer is more useful than the amenity label.
2. Official public parking
Public parking works well for a day visit when you arrive with time to spare. Use only marked spaces and follow the signs on site. Check whether payment is made at a machine, by phone or to an attendant, and keep proof of payment when one is provided.
Do not assume that a quiet curb is a legal overnight space. Temporary restrictions may be introduced for events, road works or the summer traffic plan.
3. Private paid parking
Private car parks can be a useful fallback near the centre. Before entering, confirm the total price, closing time, overnight access and whether you must leave the key. If the entrance is tight, look at it before committing to the turn.
A low-stress arrival plan
- Save the parking pin and accommodation pin offline.
- Screenshot the final driving instructions in case mobile data drops.
- Do not follow navigation into a pedestrian or restricted street.
- Call the host before making a difficult turn if the signs and instructions disagree.
- Park first, then carry luggage along the confirmed walking route.
- Once settled, explore central Ohrid on foot.
Bring comfortable shoes: the Old Town includes cobbles, slopes and steps. If someone in your group has limited mobility, ask about the walking surface and building access as well as the distance.

From the studio, the Old Chinar is around one minute away, the Old Bazaar around two minutes, and the lake promenade around eight minutes on foot. For most stays, the car can remain parked while central Ohrid is explored on foot.

Frequently asked questions
Can I drive into Ohrid Old Town?
Some streets have restricted access, and conditions can change by season or event. Follow current road signs and host instructions rather than assuming that every route displayed by a navigation app is open to visitors.
Is free street parking reliable in summer?
It should not be your main arrival plan. Availability is unpredictable, and a space that looks convenient may have restrictions that are not obvious until you inspect the signs.
Do I need a car once I am in central Ohrid?
Not for the main historic sights. The Old Bazaar, lakefront and much of the Old Town are best explored on foot. A car is more useful for trips farther along the eastern shore, Galichica National Park or villages outside the centre.
