Best places to swim in Lake Ohrid near the city
· Updated
Choosing where to swim in Lake Ohrid depends on the kind of day you want. You can take a quick dip beside the Old Town, walk to a rocky lakeside platform or travel south for a longer beach day.
This guide compares five useful areas rather than promising “secret” beaches. Conditions, access, businesses and lifeguard coverage can change during the season, so check the signs and the water when you arrive.
Before choosing a swimming place
Ask these questions first:
- Do you want to walk, take a taxi or drive?
- Do you need a gradual entry, shade, food or a toilet?
- Are you comfortable entering from rocks, steps or a platform?
- Is anyone in the group a child or an uncertain swimmer?
- Do you want a short swim or a full day away from the centre?
Lake Ohrid is exceptionally clear, but clear water can make depth difficult to judge. Never dive before checking the entry, and do not assume that every platform has a lifeguard.
1. Saraiste: the closest Old Town swim
Best for: a quick swim without transport.
Saraiste sits at lake level inside the historic quarter. It is small and urban rather than a full-service beach, but its location makes it useful when you want to swim and continue exploring the Old Town.
Arrive earlier for more space. Bring only what you need, keep valuables secure and inspect the entry before getting into the water. Because the area is compact, it is not the best choice for a family that wants several hours of beach facilities.
From Hem Boi Apartments, walk through the Old Bazaar toward the harbour and continue into the lower Old Town.
2. Kaneo and the lakeside platforms
Best for: a scenic swim paired with an Old Town walk.
The shoreline around Kaneo has rocky edges, platforms and ladder or step access in places. The setting below the hillside is memorable, but it suits confident swimmers more than people who need a gentle beach entry.
Wear shoes with grip, stay on established paths and check how you will exit before entering. Rocks can be slippery, and the water may become deep quickly. If the lake is rough or the access feels uncertain, enjoy the walk and choose a managed beach instead.

3. Gorica and Slavija: a beach day close to Ohrid
Best for: more shoreline space without travelling far down the lake.
The Gorica and Slavija area is south of central Ohrid and can be reached by car or taxi. Compared with the tiny Old Town swimming points, this stretch offers more room to settle for part of the day.
The exact mix of open beach, managed sections, sunbeds, food and safety services varies by season. Check access and prices on arrival. If accessibility is important, confirm the current condition of ramps, paths and toilets before travelling rather than relying on an older listing.
4. Lagadin: a relaxed trip along the eastern shore
Best for: spending several hours by the water outside the city.
Lagadin is farther south along the road toward St Naum. The shoreline around the village provides a different pace from central Ohrid and works well when swimming is the main plan for the day.
Expect a mix of pebble and platform access depending on the exact place you choose. Water shoes are useful. Parking, shade and food options vary, so decide whether you want a managed beach area or a simpler place to put down a towel.
Traffic back toward Ohrid becomes heavier at popular times. If you need to be in the centre for a reservation, leave a comfortable margin.
5. Trpejca: the longer half-day escape
Best for: clear water, village atmosphere and a half-day or full-day outing.
Trpejca is an old fishing village farther down the eastern shore, between the lake and Galichica. The beach sits below the village, so expect a descent on foot and plan what you carry.
This is not a quick walk from Ohrid. Travel by car, taxi, excursion or seasonal transport after checking the return plan. The trip makes more sense when you combine swimming with lunch and time in the village.
For an even more facility-oriented day, the commercial beach and camping areas around Gradishte are another option on the same side of the lake. Access arrangements and charges vary by operator and season.
Lake Ohrid swimming safety
- Use designated swimming areas whenever possible.
- Follow current flags, signs and lifeguard instructions.
- Never dive into unfamiliar water, even when it looks clear.
- Supervise children continuously and stay within arm’s reach of weak swimmers.
- Leave the water if wind, waves or boat traffic increase.
- Use water shoes on pebbles, rocks and slippery steps.
- Protect yourself from the sun and carry drinking water.
- Do not swim alone late in the day or in an empty, unmanaged area.
Services and lifeguard coverage are seasonal. A place that is managed in July may have limited or no services at another time of year.
